The Kitchen of the Meaning
By: Roland Barthes

The Kitchen of Meaning, by Roland Barthes is all about semiotics and beacuse of that I had hard time understanding this text. His main idea of this text is that everything around us such as “A garment, an automobile, a dish of cooked food….” are signs and sign has more than its definite meaning. According to Roland, signs can be interpreted in different way by different people, time and position and because of that it has various meaning. You can relate that with the sign such as Swastiska which has positive meaning or it is auspicious to Hindu's and Buddhist culture but it means totally different to western after it was used by Nazi. It was considered as negative and which is exacatly what Roland was trying to explain. I think his main purpose of writing this essay is to make people think outside of box.

Learning to Read and Write
By: Frederick Douglass

I am really impressed by the way Frederick Douglass used such as learning to how to write by looking at ship carperter and from white kids to learn how to read and write. He suffered alot to learn how to read and write without a formal teacher but he still managed and never give up. He said that "It opened my eyes to the horrible pit, but to no ladder upon which to get out" which shows the imporatnce of being a literate person.

Casa: A Partial Remembrance of a Puerto Rican Childhood
- Judith Ortiz Cofer

Mother Tongue
-Amy Tan

Amy Tan's  Mother Tongue has so many things which I can relate with my family. It especaially reminds me of  my  mom. My mom  tries her best with her " Broken English" to communicate with people around her but I used to get embarassed like author Amy Tan did at the beginning of her story. I like the fact that author took her boss' criticism in a positive way and worked harder to prove everyone that she can be a writer.

A Woman's Beauty: Put down or Power source?
                                 - Susan Sontag

In the reading A Woman's Beauty: Put down or Power source?, the author really focuses on woman and how they are criticized by others(Men). She said that women who try to look attractive are crticized and at the same time women who don't put make up and things like that are also critized. I think it is totally true and i can relate this situation with me.  I like when she said Men or society is teaching woman how to woman and woman are judged by how they are rather than who they are?

Confessions of a Recovering Misogynist
                     - Kevin Powell

In "Confessions of a Recovering Misogynist", The author talks about how his childhood experiences  such as his mom beating him forced him to become misogynist. One thing I like about this text is that he has courage to share his personal experience unlike Susan Sontag where she just talk  about others and doesn't share her personal experience.

Can I Get a Witness
- Shani Jamila

The author faces some discrmination when she was in both high school and college. I like when she said "automatically my toungue to fit the ear of whatever crew i was with" and i think it is true because sometimes eventhough you wanted say something but  you can't. Its like think twice before say kind of situation.
